IP 574: Introduction to Nuclear Nonproliferation

This course will survey the causes and consequences of nuclear and missile proliferation. Topics covered will include: the history of proliferation, theories/causes of proliferation, basic nuclear, and missile technology, treaties and regimes to control the spread of nuclear weapons and missiles, regions of proliferation concern (South Asia, Middle East, Northeast Asia), and current initiatives to combat proliferation. Requirement for the course include a take-home midterm, an in-class presentation, a final policy memo, and regular participation in class discussions. Readings will be drawn from a wide variety of published and on-line materials.
